Dhanteras 2026: auspicious time to buy gold

Is Dhanteras on 6 or 7 November 2026?

The 6th. Dhanteras is kept on the day when Teras is running in pradosh, the period just after sunset. In 2026 Teras starts on the morning of the 6th and lasts through the whole evening, so Dhanteras and its puja are on 6 November.

Teras is still running until 10:48 am on Saturday 7 November, so purchases until then also count as Teras. The evening of the 7th is Kali Chaudas.

These times are calculated from your city's sunrise, and only the part of each Choghadiya that falls within Teras is shown. Pick your city from the list to change them.

How to read this: on 6 November Amrit begins at 9:35 am, but until 10:31 am it is still Baras. So the table shows Amrit from 10:31 am only. The night Choghadiya are auspicious too, though most shops are closed by then.

Many families also accept Chal as a neutral time for shopping, and avoid buying during Rog, Kaal or Udveg. Follow your family's custom.

What to buy on Dhanteras

The purchase does not have to be large. Many Gujarati families buy one of these:

• A gold or silver coin, or a small piece of jewellery
• A new brass, copper or steel utensil
• Whole coriander seeds (dhana), which are offered in the puja and later sown
• A new broom, seen as sweeping poverty out of the home

These are beliefs; the intention behind the purchase is considered more important than the item.

Dhanteras puja and Yam Deepdaan

On Dhanteras evening, Lakshmi, Kuber and Lord Dhanvantari are worshipped during pradosh. The puja muhurat in the table is when pradosh, the fixed Vrishabha lagna and Teras all overlap.

The same evening many homes do Yam Deepdaan: a four-wick lamp is placed outside the main door, facing south. The belief is that it protects the family from untimely death.

Why is Dhanteras celebrated?

In the story of the churning of the ocean, Lord Dhanvantari emerged on Aso Vad Teras carrying a pot of amrit. He is the god of Ayurveda, so the day is about health as well as wealth.

In Gujarat, Dhanteras opens the main days of Diwali. See the Diwali 2026 Lakshmi Puja muhurat too.

How we calculate these times

Teras comes from the angle between the Sun and the Moon, and a tithi changes at the same instant everywhere in the world. The Choghadiya come from each city's sunrise and sunset. The lagna is sidereal, with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Times are rounded to the minute, so a printed panchang may differ by 1-3 minutes. What is Choghadiya.
